Just came across this and had to share: dessert fondue makers in the shape of Hershey’s Kisses! How cute is that? Haven’t tried one myself, but they’re currently on sale at Amazon. Originally $14.99, they’re now as low as $5.11 (66% off). Curiously, the discount depends on the color: silver is 51% off, gold is 66% off, red is 65% off, and green is 33% off. Hershey’s chocolate not included.

During the month of February, Amazon.com is offering $20 off purchases of Toblerone, Cote d’Or, Milka, and Terry’s chocolates when you spend $49 or more. Enter promotional code “TOBLERCT” at checkout to receive the discount. These chocolates are sold in packs of 6, 10, 12, and 40 (!), so this may only be of interest to hardcore chocoholics or those wishing to buy large quantities to give as gifts.

How to taste chocolate February 1, 2009

Chocolate connoisseurs differ in how they taste chocolates, so I find it interesting when others describe their tasting process. David Bacco, of David Bacco Chocolats in Madison, Wis., describes his process in the February 2009 issue of Brava:

Take your time and taste your chocolates before a meal to maximize your sensory impressions … Warm the chocolate gently between your thumb and forefinger to release the aromas, particularly the bright upper notes. Let the truffle rest on your tongue and breathe through your nose to aerate the flavor panel and release the vivid sensations. Then roll the truffle to coat the mouth and let the different parts of the tongue experience the flavors prior to swallowing.

How about you? Do you have a special way of tasting chocolates?

The number of products affected by the recent Salmonella contamination of peanut butter and peanut paste from Peanut Corporation of America continues to grow. Fortunately, few chocolate manufacturers seem to have been impacted. Those that were include:

  • Blanton’s
  • Hy-Vee
  • Landies
  • Rain Creek Baking
  • Sinbad
  • South Bend Chocolate Company
  • Wegmans Swiss Recipe

For the latest information, see the FDA’s Recall of Products Containing Peanut Butter. The FDA has also published an easy-to-search and easy-to-browse list at Search for Peanut Butter Product Recalls.

What are the best after Christmas specials? Those on chocolate, of course! This year promises to be a windfall for chocoholics, with chocolatiers and stores selling leftover holiday merchandise at steep discounts.  For example, the following are each offering at least 50% off holiday chocolates:

  • Lake Champlain (shop online)
  • Macy’s (in-store only)
  • Walgreens (in-store only)

Today a flickr friend invited me to join The Chocolate Life, a social network for chocolate aficionados. I wasn’t sure what to expect—so many niche social networks are amateurish at best—but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. The site has quite a few members (634 as of today) and many appear to be active. In addition to member profiles, there are photos, videos, discussions, and information on chocolate-related events. Sound interesting? Head over to The Chocolate Life and sign up. It’s easy to join and it’s free!
